Sturdivant, <br />Laurens Fish <br /> <br />The Mayor called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Mr. Norman Starling, Col lege Minister at McCarty Student <br />Center, gave the Invocation. <br /> <br />The Minutes of the meetings of July 12 and July 26, 1965, <br />were unanimously approved, on motion of Alderman Froh and <br />second of Alderman Pool. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Sam Beecroft, spokesman for a group of citizens, came before <br />the Counci I to discuss needed improvements at the Municipal <br />Airport. He reminded the Counci I of action taken at the May 10th <br />meeting: a motion that, if the Gary Airport had not been ac- <br />quired by the City in 90 days, an improvement program would <br />be started at the Municipal Airport. <br />The Mayor said the City had been informed by General Services <br />Administration that the transfer of property to the City would <br />be made the week of August 9th. Mr. Beecroft said if the City <br />did not intend to improve the airport, the 16 acres deeded to <br />the City for an airport should be returned to Mr. Lowman. <br />Alderman Damon said he was fami I iar with the transaction; he <br />posed the question whether the City might not sti II have need <br />for the old airport, even after the Gary air faci 1 ities were <br />acquired, because of its close proximity to the city limits. <br />Mr. Robert Lowman said he would like to see the property de- <br />veloped as an airport, but that if something was not done im- <br />mediately, he would probably demand that the land be deeded <br />back to him. Alderman Whittenberg said he was also fami liar <br />with the City's acquisition of the property, since he had <br />assisted with the project as a private citizen, and that he <br />had made the motion May lOth that the property be improved <br />if the Gary faci lities were not acquired in 90 days. <br />Mr. Whittenberg moved that work be started by the City next <br /> <br />l= <br />U <br />"..;J <br />C:l:: <br />, ~~ <br />
