Mr. Tom Moope, counsel for Thrift Distributors, lnc" ,came before
the Council to speak in opposition to a se~vice s~ationodpinance
under consideration. He said his clients, owners of three self-
service gasoline outlets in San Marcos, wepe, under attack for not
employing proper safety measures. Mr. Moore pointed out that his
clients had complied with all existing ordinances, and if the pro-
posed ordinance should be passed~ it would "put us out of business".
He ci tedthe .fact that ,none of their, stations in Texas had had a'
fire, as evidence ,that there was no more danger involved in a
self-service station, than in the regular serv.ice station. He also
~tated that most ,of the major companies were experimenting with
self-service units. Mr. Moore presented a petition carrying 300
signatures, asking that the self-service type of station be allowed
to contin~e in San Marcos. In answer to Councilman Dannelley's
question, it was stated that the three self-service stations in
San Marcos are of non-combusti:;ble construction, either concrete
block, or metal.
Jack Ledbetter, cou nselreprese nting maj or, oil company di stributors
in S~n Marcos, spoke in favor of the proposed ordinance.
Questions asked by Councilmen were answered by Mr. Moore and
Mr. Ledbetter.
