Narrative
page-8

2)

Training for volunteer ESL, literacy and GED tutors.

The project currently provides tutor training for GED and
literacy tutors. Funding of the grant will allow us to
continue offering this training and to develop a new
training program for ESL tutors. The new program will
utilize a Literacy Volunteers of America slide-tape workshop
which we will purchase with grant funds.

3)

Expansion of the library's Lifelong Learning Collection to
include materials for ESL tutoring.

Specifically we will purchase books, cassette tapes, and
other audiovisual materials for ESL instruction; high
interest-low reading level books and bilingual life-skills
materials. We will also purchase ten portable cassette
players for use in the tutoring program. All materials and
equipment will circulate.

4)

Development of the library as a center for information about
local social service agencies.

The library will gather, display and distribute brochures
from local social service agencies. We will also develop
and distribute a bilingual (Spanîsh-English) social services
directory and sponsor a social services fair. While the
library has a well developed reference and information
service, we have never made any structured attempt to
provide this type of information to the community.

5)

Presentation of a story time program to the Hispanic
community to help ESL children learn English and to
introduce them to the library.

The library has always offered a popular story time program
for preschool children. Unfortunately, very few people from
the Hispanic community have attended this program. We hope
to reverse this situation by taking story time into the
Hispanic community. We feel that the story time program will
be an effective way to introduce Hispanics to the library
while helping them strengthen their English skills. The
program will include twenty weekly sessions which will be
held at the Southside Community Center.

6)

Development of an effective bilingual (Spanish-English)
publicity campaign to introduce members of the ESL community
to the services and resources of the public library.

The library has always had a very active publicity program.
We publish a monthly calendar of activities.and a quarterly
newsletter. We also have regular newspaper and radio
coverage of library activities. However, it appears that
this campaign has not been effective with regard to
