Once ccrrpleted, <br /> the building will provide recreational seJ::Vices and criræ prevention programs <br /> to its participants. During the interim, criIœ prevention education is offered <br /> through the schools and other parent/youth organizations and will continue in the <br /> upcœlJ.I1g year. <br /> Drug and Alcohol Awareness - '!he Coordinator is an active rnanber of the <br /> San Marcos Charrber of Ccmrerce Criræ Prevention Council and Hays/Caldwell Council <br /> on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. '!he intent of the group is to educate the public, <br /> particularly students, on drug and alcohol abuse. '!his is done through instructior <br /> in the public schools and Southwest Texas State University. In addition, saninars <br /> are given to business and civic groups. '!he result has been a coalition of <br /> ccmmmi ty leaders and residents to denounce drug and alcohol abuse and provide <br /> alternative activities for students. A productive result to date has been the <br /> decreased availability of alcoholic beverages at fraternity and sorority rush <br /> parties on campus. '!hese lectures and the educational naterial will be continued <br /> and is a priority for public awareness. <br /> Business and Residential Security - '!he Coordinator has the task of perfonning <br /> business and residential surveys throughout the area. '!his work includes not only <br /> canpleted buildings and residences, but also those under construction. By meeting <br /> wi th wilders and owners during the initial phases of construction, security <br /> suggestions can be offered that can save the owner the cost of having to replace <br /> inadequate security devices or change the environmental design once the structure <br /> is cœpleted. When conferring with builders, suggestions are also made on how to <br /> increase construction site. security. By woJ;:'king closely with City officials, the <br /> Coordinator has introduced and implemented the use of security and anti-theft <br /> devices to reduce the City's cost of repairing and replacing City property. By <br /> offering this valuable service, trouble spots can be avoided before a criræ occurs. <br /> Other Criræ Prevention Services Offered - Listed are the crime prevention <br /> services presently offered that are a basic part of the program. '!he other <br /> crirœ prevention services provided to the camuni ty are shoplifting prevention, <br /> anployee theft and pilferage, inventory control, the proper method of acceptance <br /> of checks and credit cards, child abuse, sexual assault, senior citizen security, <br /> and anæd robbery prevention. '!he anned robbery prevention training has been <br /> one of the IIDst popular programs offered. Several businesses have been surveyed <br /> and mJCk anned robberies conducted using officers as robbers. '!he program has <br /> been able to educate anployees and managers to the dangers inherent in an actual <br /> robbery situation. In addition, it has ÌItproved the abilities of affected personneJ.. <br /> in getting descriptions of suspects, the securing of evidence, and to familiarize <br /> these personnel with the investigative needs of law enforcement officers. We will <br /> continue to offer these programs to the pililic. <br /> Media Contact - By naintaining a close working relationship with the local <br /> Iœdia, interest in criIœ prevention has been generated. On the average, there is <br /> at least tv.o articles per IIDIlth designed to increase the public I s awareness. '!he <br /> Coordinator has also ccmpiled literature in both Spanish and English that is <br /> distributed at functions to further educate the public. <br /> b.
