AWNING/CANOPY/MARQUkE SIGN: A SIGN that is mountBd or <br /> painted on, or attached to, an AWNING, CANOPY or <br /> MARQUEE such that the SIGN does not proJect more t.han <br /> one foot above, belo,,?, or beyond the physical <br /> dimensions of the AWNING, CANOPY, or MARQUEE. <br /> 6. BANNER SIGN: A PERMANENT SIGN other than a governmental <br /> or institutional flag, which is composed of fabric or <br /> other lightweight. material which mayor may not be <br /> enclosed in a rigid frame, and which is secured or <br /> mounted perpendicular to a building wall so as to allow <br /> movement of the SIGN caused by wind. SIGNS composed of <br /> fabric or other lightweight material which is otherwise <br /> attached to a building, or suspended in the air between <br /> end supports of any type, are regulated as TEMPORARY <br /> SIGNS. <br /> 7. BARE BULB ILLUMINATION: Light emitted by one or more <br /> bare bulbs not installed in a fixture specifically <br /> designed to provide directional control by means of a <br /> shield or reflector. <br /> 8. BENCH SIGN: A SIGN located on any part of the surface <br /> of a bench or seat placed on or adJacent to a public <br /> right-of-way. <br /> 9. BULLETIN BOARD SIGN: A PERMANENT SIGN on the PREMISES <br /> of a governmental, religious, educational, or other <br /> noncommercial institution, and which regularly contains <br /> announcements of events or activities occurring at the <br /> institution or similar information and messages not <br /> advertising a specific product or business service. <br /> 10. BUSINESS SIGN: A SIGN which directs attention to a <br /> business or profession conducted, or to a commodity or <br /> service sold, offered, or manufactured, or to an <br /> entertainment offered, on the PREMISES where the SIGN <br /> is located or to which it is affixed. <br /> 11. CHANGEABLE COpy SIGN: An ON-PREMISE SIGN consisting of <br /> nonstructural panels or individual message elements <br /> such as letters, numbers or symbols which are designed <br /> and intended for frequent manual replacement or <br /> alteration after the SIGN is ERECTED. <br /> 12. CITY: The CITY of San Marcos, Texas. <br /> 13. COMMUNITY INFORM..'\'I'ION SIGN: Any SIGN intended primarily <br /> to promote items of general interest to the community <br /> such as time, temperature, date, atmospheric <br /> conditions, and upcoming noncommercial events or <br /> charitable causes. <br /> 14. CONSTRUCTION SIGN A TEMPORARY SIGN ERECTED on the <br /> PREMISES where construction is taking place indicating <br /> the names of the architect, engineer, landscape <br /> architect, contractors or similar artisans, and the <br /> OWNERS, lending institution, or other parties having a <br /> role or interest in the structure or project. <br /> 15. DEFECTIVE SIGN: A SIGN which is not maintained in a <br /> safe and good structural condition, including <br /> replacement of defective or missing parts, painting, <br /> repainting and cleaning. <br /> 16. DIRECTIONAL SIGN: A SIGN which serves solely to <br /> designate the location or direction of any place or <br /> area, or states rules for pedestrian or vehicular <br /> traffic, on the PREMISES where the SIGN is located. <br /> 17. ELECTRIC SIGN: A SIGN that is illuminated by an <br /> electric light source located on or in the SIGN, or is <br /> otherwise connected to an electric power source for any <br /> purpose. <br /> -2- <br />
