~ utiJ.i.zat:ia1

san Marc:x>s Municipal Airport presently has four operational runways,
all in excess of 5,000 feet in length. Because of the nature of the
airport operational profile and the character of anticipated future
traffic, all four runways are not essential to airport operations.
Based upon recent aircraft traffic counts, the present and future
rmlWay utilizatioo is as follows:

n.ble 3.3
~ AlII) PROJBCTBD RORWAY t1fiLIZATIOR,
SAW MARCOS MURI:CIPAL AJ..l4ua.., 1985

Runway

12-30
17-35
04-22
08-26

1985

68%
3%
22%
7%

2005

70%
3%
20%
7%

cnly three runways are essential at San Marcos and it is conceivable
that either Runways 04-22 or 17-35 could be closed to future traffic.
If this were done, however, there would be shifts in runway
utilizatioo to the remaininq runways.

Although it appears that Runway 08-26 should be a logical candidate
far closure, there are times when crosswind capability, particularly
during periods of stralq easterly winds, is essential. For this reason
it is reoammended that Runway 08-26 remain operational. However, it
should be noted that the condition of the runway is deteriorating
rapidly, and major repairs will be needed to keep the runway in
service.

Runway 17-35 could also be considered as a candidate for closure, and
should that occur considerable land would be opened up. In addition,
there is the potential for savings in runway maintenance and the oosts
associated with future improvements. The low utilization of Runway
17-35 is due, in large measure, to extremely poor runway surface
oondition1 if the runway was improved, some additional use would
likely occur due to prevailing wind coverage. However, the cost
versus benefit would be very high because of the availability of other
runways.

Runway 04-22 is considered to be essential for long-term airport
development due to the nearly 90% wind coverage (15 mph) of the
runway. It is also essential due to strong southwestern crosswind
components occurring much of the time.

3.4
