<br />as to recover energy or material resources from the waste,
<br />or so as to render the waste non-hazardous or less
<br />hazardous; safer to transport, store, or dispose of; or
<br />amenable for recovery, amenable for storage, or reduced in
<br />volume.
<br />
<br />Pollution - By the term Pollution is meant the alteration of
<br />physical, thermal, chemical, radiological or biological
<br />quality of, or the contamination of, any water in the City
<br />to the extent that the water is rendered harmful,
<br />detrimental, or injurious to humans, animal life,
<br />vegetation, or property or to public health, safety, or
<br />welfare, or that impairs the usefulness of the public enjoy-
<br />ment of the water for any lawful or reasonable purpose.
<br />
<br />Prohibited Waste - The term Prohibited Waste shall mean any
<br />waste which is totally restricted from discharge into the
<br />sanitary sewer system of the City by this Ordinance or the
<br />amount in the waste stream prior to pretreatment above the
<br />limits listed in this Ordinance.
<br />
<br />Receiving Stream - By the term Receiving Stream is meant the
<br />waterway into which a wastewater treatment plant, operated
<br />by the City, discharges the treated effluent.
<br />
<br />Sampling and Testing Costs - By the term Sampling and
<br />Testing Costs shall mean the cost to the City for field
<br />sampling and laboratory testing the industrial waste from a
<br />person to determine their surcharge and/or compliance with
<br />the Industrial Waste Ordinance. This applies to samples
<br />taken for sanitary sewer discharges and storm sewer
<br />discharges.
<br />
<br />Sanitary Convenience - By the term Sanitary Convenience is
<br />meant any plumbing fixture (except for a food waste disposal
<br />unit) not required to have a sand and/or grease trap
<br />(interceptor) according to provisions of the Plumbing Code.
<br />
<br />Sanitary Sewer - By the term Sanitary Sewer is meant a pipe
<br />or conduit owned, controlled or subject to the jurisdiction
<br />of the City, designed to collect and transport sewage and
<br />industrial waste.
<br />
<br />Sewage - By the term Sewage is meant
<br />normally discharging from the sanitary
<br />dwellings (including apartment houses),
<br />buildings, factories and institutions,
<br />surface water and industrial wastes.

<br />Sewer System - By the term Sewer System is meant all of the
<br />property involved in the operation of a sanitary sewer
<br />utility. It includes land, wastewater lines and
<br />appurtenances, pumping stations, treatment works, wastewater
<br />treatment plants, and general property.
<br />
<br />Similar Installation - By the term Similar Installation is
<br />meant gasoline dispensing facilities which furnish equipment
<br />for, and have designated areas for, any of the following
<br />types of vehicle maintenance service: oil changes,
<br />lubrication, mechanical repair, or car wash.
<br />
<br />Solid Waste - By the term Solid Waste is meant any garbage,
<br />refuse sludge and other discarded material, including
<br />solid, liquid, semisolid or contained gaseous material
<br />resulting from industrial, municipal, commercial mining,
<br />and agricultural operations and from community and
<br />institutional activities.
<br />
<br />SS (Denoting Suspended Solids) - By the term SS is meant
<br />solids that either float on the surface of, or are in
<br />suspension in, water, sewage, industrial waste, or other
<br />liquid and which are removable by laboratory filtering as
<br />specified in Standard Methods expressed as milligrams per
<br />liter (MG/L).
