<br /> -8- <br />Sec. 3-47. Redemption. <br />The owner or keeper of any dog, cow, horse, jack, jennet, <br />sheep, goat or other like animal captured or impounded under <br />the provisions of this article shall be permitted and <br />allowed, to redeem, reclaim, and receive possession of any <br />such animal within seventy-two (72) hours after impounding, <br />upon payment to the city of the pound fee, as provided under <br />this article, and in addition thereto, insofar as dogs are <br />concerned, the payment of the registration fee as provided in <br />section 3-27 if the particular dog has not been previously <br />reg i s te red for the current year. <br />Sec. 3-48. Disposition of unclaimed animals and feral dogs. <br />(a) Should the owner or keeper of any impounded dog, cow, <br />horse, jack, jennet, sheep, goat or other like animal fail to <br />redeem same as provided under this article within the <br />seventy-two (72) hours provided, then any such animal may be <br />destroyed in a manner approved by the American Humane <br />Society. At any time subsequent to expiration of the <br />prescribed redemption period and prior to the destruction of <br />any such animal under the provisions hereof, the city may <br />sell any such animal so impounded to the first person <br />tendering to the city the pound fees and license fees <br />provided for in this chapter together with the sum of six <br />dollars ($6.00). <br />(b) After investigation by the animal control officer or his <br />designee, should the animal control officer or his designee <br />identify a feral dog which is running at large on pUblic or <br />private property within the city limits and determine that <br />impoundment of such dog cannot feasibly be made by the animal <br />control officer or his designee, then the animal control <br />officer or his designee is hereby authorized and empowered to <br />make use of field euthanasia to destroy such dog. <br />Sec. 3-49. Impoundment of dogs which have bitten, etc .. , <br /> persons. <br />If any dog, whether vaccinated or not, shall have bitten, <br />scratched or otherwise attacked any person, the owner of such <br />dog, or any person having knowledge of the incident, shall <br />immediately notify the health authority or, in his absence, <br />the assistant health authority, and animal control off icer, <br />and the dog shall be confined in the dog pound or at a <br />veterinary hospital for a period of twenty-one (21) days at <br />the expense of the owner or keeper of the dog. This time <br />limit may be reduced only by the joint written approval of <br />the health authority or, in his absence, the assistant health <br />authority, and the city veterinarian, but in no instance <br />shall it be less than ten (10) consecutive days, not <br />including the day of impoundment. No dog held for <br />observation shall be released without the written permission <br />of the health authority or, in his abS!ence, the assistant <br />health authority or his or their authorized <br />representative(s). Any dog suffering from the bite of a <br />rabid animal shall be quarantined in a veterinary hospital, <br />the expense of the same to be paid by the owner or keeper of <br />the dog, for a period of six (6) months. Under no <br />circumstances shall the dog so quarantined be released to the <br />owner or keeper nor will the dog be allowed to remain on the <br />premises of the owner or keeper. It shall be the duty of all <br />practicing veterinarians to report to the health authority <br />all cases of rabies or suspected rabies which shall come to <br />his attention. <br />
