He encouraged the Council <br />to support the Freeport exemption. 8) Ofelia Vazquez -Philo stated she is <br />the former Director of Community Action. She stated she feels if San Marcos <br />welcomes companies with this tax break, then they would provide better <br />opportunities for their employees. If we were to give a tax break, they <br />would in turn provide more services. 8) Ruben Becerra encouraged the <br />Council to support the Freeport exemption. He stated he feels the Council <br />should consider the opportunities to add more people to help pay taxes and <br />continue the growth of community. 9) Denise Collazo stated she is the <br />2005 -2006 past SMMA President. She stated she is employed at Goodrich. She <br />read a letter of support. 10) Suzanne Putegnat stated she is an Accountant <br />at C -Fan and a graduate of TxState. She stated if not for C -Fan then she <br />would have to drive to Austin for work and comparable pay. She encouraged <br />the Council to support this exemption. 11) Kathleen Hicks stated she is the <br />Database Administrator at C -Fan. She encouraged the Council to support this <br />exemption. She stated she feels San Marcos needs every opportunity to <br />attract and keep companies in San Marcos. 12 ) Bruce Tifft stated he is the <br />Plant Manager at Goodrich and on the Board of SMMA and SMED. He read a <br />letter of support for the exemption. He encouraged the Council to support <br />this exemption, which is an investment in the future of San Marcos. 13) <br />Wayne Becak stated he is a Board Member of ED San Marcos and the Vice Chair <br />of SM Chamber of Commerce. He encouraged the Council to support this <br />exemption. He stated he support the retail growth, but feels San Marcos <br />needs more auto - related, computer and distribution centers. 14) Marge <br />Burkett stated she moved to San Marcos from Las Vegas. She stated that she <br />is opposed to companies coming to San Marcos without paying taxes. She <br />stated she feels the burden will be left to the tax payers. 15) John <br />Burkett stated he moved to San Marcos 72 days ago. He stated he is opposed <br />to letting businesses have this exemption. He stated he feels companies <br />will come to San Marcos without this exemption. 16) Daniel Palomo stated <br />he moved to San Marcos less than a year ago. He stated he opposes this <br />exemption because it would take away $200,000.00 from the city. He stated <br />he also feels businesses will come to San Marcos without this exemption. <br />Mr. Guerrero moved for adoption of the Ordinance on third and final reading, <br />and Mr. Jones seconded the motion. Ms. Robertson thanked everyone for <br />speaking tonight. She stated she will be voting against this exemption. She <br />stated she feels this exemption limits the flexibility of different ways to <br />attract businesses to San Marcos. She stated she feels this forces the <br />Council to give an annual incentive and a future Council may not agree. She <br />moved to table the adoption of the Ordinance until April, and Mr. Bose <br />seconded the motion. On roll call the following vote was recorded: <br />AYE: Thomaides, Bose and Robertson. <br />NAY: Couch, Narvaiz, Guerrero and Jones. <br />ABSTAIN: None. <br />Motion to table failed. Mr. Jones inquired to the different types of <br />businesses Mr. Becak was talking about benefiting from this exemption.
