Councilmember Thomaides reported on sustainability. He also brought up the idea of a . <br />Sustainability Coordinator, and noted that salary is based upon productivity. Each city has a <br />different mindset and plan, and it depends on what our citizens tell us. He also attended a <br />session on energy efficiency and green jobs. <br />Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Porterfield reported that San Marcos is very far ahead of some other <br />cities. There was discussion on our dependence on cars. Another interesting session was about <br />historic preservation. She noted that sustainability can pay for business by saving on energy <br />costs. <br />29. Discussion on watering schedules and the conservation goals for the Texas Water <br />Development Board Plan, and provide direction to staff. <br />Tom Taggart, Director of Public Services, updated the City Council on watering schedules. <br />Council directed staff to give citizens the choice of which day they wish to water. <br />Mr. Taggart also reported that the City has exceeded their conservation goals for the Texas <br />Water Development Board Plan. This means the City has not used the amount of water they <br />projected, and this is very good. <br />30. Discussion on a proposed RFP for recycling services for commercial and multi-familv, <br />and provide direction to staff. <br />Laurie Moyer, Assistant City Manager, briefed the City Council on a proposed RFP. Council • <br />consensus was to make recycling mandatory for multi-family and optional for commercial. <br />Council also directed staff to determine how this should be administered through conversation <br />with apartment owners (whether the City administers this or if it is the responsibility of the <br />owner). There was also consensus that the bid be awarded only to a vendor that can provide <br />single stream recycling. <br />31. Discussion on the Lion's Club Tube Rental and provide direction to staff. <br />Rodney Cobb, Director of Community Services, reported on the fire that occurred at the tube <br />rental facility last week. <br />Mike Rhoades, 401 Hunter Ridge, President of the San Marcos Lions Club, thanked the City for <br />their assistance and generosity. All they need at this time is the okay to move forward. They are <br />hoping to open on May 16. <br />32. Presentation by the Embassy Suites and San Marcos Conference Center and discussion <br />regarding Conference Center bookings. <br />Ruth Buck and Tom Pugh, with Embassy Suites and San Marcos Conference Center, reported <br />that in their region, which includes 14 hotels, they ranked fourth in productivity. Some of the <br />other hotels were more established and larger, and they are proud of this ranking. She noted that <br />80%-95% of persons who have stayed there have asked to re-book.
