What types of issues are most commonly dealt with by this board or commission? The Zoning Commission handles zoning changes and the issuance of Specific Use Permits as provided for in the City's Zoning Ordinance. The Zoning Commission regularly conducts public hearings to consider testimony regarding the appropriateness of a land use in a particular location. After conducting public hearings, the Zoning Commission. makes its recommendations to the City Council for their final approval. The Commission also acts as the appeals board for sIgn varIances. 5, Does this board or commission continue tå have :J. viable role related to its charge or are there any duties that could be e:J.sily h:J.ndlcd at the staff !eve I? Please be specific, The Zoning Commission plays a critical role in meeting its charge under St;¡te law and the City Charter. Since most of the Commission's activities require public notice and a public hearing by State law, there is little that could be handled on a staff level. It is possible that revisions to the City's Specific Use Permit Process could eliminate some of the Commission's time. 6. Would the addition of these duties require more st:J.ff hours or personnel changes? By reducing the number of land uses that require a specific use permit. it is possible that both Zoning Commission and staff time could be reduced significantly.
