He asked the Council to please approve the expansion. <br />Thea Dake, 220 Johnson Avenue, stated that the Council would have to be united <br />in order to overturn the P&Z recommendation. She said that the Historic <br />Neighborhoods are dependent to protect our City's Heritage. She spoke about her <br />home appearing on the Heritage Home Tour, and that they have helped teach <br />people about our city's history. She stated that every day people run, bike and <br />walk in these historic districts, and that she has spoken to countless people that <br />were attracted to San Marcos because of its beauty and history. She stated that <br />the more historic preservation that we have then the better off we will be. She <br />stated that businesses and other developments have marketed the historic values of <br />San Marcos; she hopes that Council will support the rhetoric. <br />James Baker, 727 Belvin Street, spoke about the P&Z meeting and provided his <br />motivations. He stated that this is more than just historic properties and it is <br />more than just putting up a marker. He stated that it takes a lot of work to repair <br />and maintain a historic structure. He stated that most of the people he has spoken <br />in this city think that it is important to preserve historic buildings. He explained <br />the tax credits that are available to homeowners. Mr. Baker stated that he doesn't <br />understand why someone wouldn't want to be in the historic district. He asked to <br />get an updated survey and review this again. <br />Leanne Smith, yielded her time to Kama Davis. <br />Kama Davis, 809 A Hazleton Street, stated that according to her statistics there are <br />71% in the Historic District that live in the district that want the expansion. She <br />stated that if the Council does not pass this tonight then please complete a new <br />survey. She stated that she would also like a neighborhood character study <br />completed. She read about a historic district overlay that is in Lancaster. She <br />read the preservation policies within that overlay district. She spoke about the <br />reconstruction of historic structures within the district. She spoke about <br />rebuilding of the Cornell Institute even though there is not an existing structure <br />present. She asked the Mayor and Council to recuse if they have any financial <br />interest in any of the potential developments within the proposed expansion area. <br />Shannon FitzPatick, 625 Burt, asked the Council to approve the expansion and for <br />the Council to adopt some design standards within the historic district. She <br />referenced The Local and its coloring being vastly different from the historic <br />City of San Marcos Page 7 <br />
