• wants to help us and give us solutions to life problems. He recited from the song, What a Friend
We Have in Jesus. He reiterated that prayer is a privilege, and we need to exercise that privilege
to reap the benefits of peace, prosperity and unity.
Pastor Paul Buntyn, 2722 Rolling Oaks, San Marcos, Texas, stated that our forefathers
understood that dealing with the affairs of a complex society needs the intervention of a higher
power. He also noted that this is not a new thing, and there is an understanding of a need beyond
ourselves. He said that prayers before a session is a humbling venture. He noted that whenever
he prays, he is commissioned by his teacher to pray in His name.
Pamela Rose, 1401 Davis, San Marcos, Texas, said that she loves our country and community.
She thanked the Council for doing a fine job. When the topic of invocations came up, she was
proud to be a citizen because we have a group of people leading us with a heart to do the right
thing. To ask for God for wisdom before making decisions that affect the entire community is a
good thing. She can't believe there are that many people that say this is a bad thing. She
restated her appreciation of the Council's willingness to tackle the tough problems and not just
sit back.
Ashley Wellmann, 1606 N. IH 35 Apt. 84, San Marcos, Texas, expressed her gratitude to the
Council for their firm stand on such a heated issue. She stated that separation of church and state
is not in constitution and not even implied. The phrase comes from letter that Thomas Jefferson
wrote to alleviate the concerns of a state sponsored church.
• Randall Howell, 326 Cheatham, San Marcos, Texas, said that he is proud of the Council for
standing up for what he believes in. He thanked the Council for standing up for what citizens
want and taking up the good fight.
8. City Council Reports
A. Update on the National Guard and Army Reserve Centers by Mayor Susan
Narvaiz.
B. Report on the I-35 Corridor Mayors Reception hosted by Mayor Susan Narvaiz.
Mayor Narvaiz reported on the Change of Command ceremony she attended. She also reported
on the new 108,000 square foot center they expect to be in within the year. It is a 600-member
training center. This is another segment of our economic diversity.
The Mayor reported on the I-35 Corridor Mayors Reception she hosted with President Trauth
from Texas State University. Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell was in attendance and was treated
to a tour of the campus and city.
9. Staff Reports
A.
