<br />L ife10ng Learning Project <br />Program Narrative--page 6 <br /> <br />2) a tutor training program which wi11 provide fræ training to the paid and voluntær <br />tutoring staff of the project; <br /> <br />3) a me sld11s program which wiJI provide a1ults in the target group with free <br />workshops on topics such as job hunting, personal Hnance, etc.; and <br /> <br />4) a me skt11s co11ectlon which wj]] provide our target population with access to <br />l1brary materials designed to meet their special information needs. <br /> <br />A l ifalong learning Project Coordinator wl11 be hired on a part-time basis to coordinate the <br />first three components of the program. The Project Coordinator wi11 work under the <br />supervision of the library's Public Services Supervisor. The life skms collection wi1J be <br />developed and organized by members of the existing staff. <br /> <br />An ooult educatIon program has been In existence at the San Marcos Public Library since <br />\ 984 when it stwted with one volunteer tutor. Since that time, the program hæ provided <br />over 1 ,500 contact hours of free adult education tutoring using a combination of paid and <br />volunteer staff. This existing program wm be incorporated into the new lifelong Learning <br />Project. The Project Coordinator wH1 be responsible for developing an aggressive pubHcity <br />program to recruit new students. In atkfition, the Project QJordinator wm be responsible <br />for matching students with volunteer tutors, monitoring student progress, etc.. With the <br />anticipated growth in this program, new materials wj]] need to be purchased. <br /> <br />The tutor training component of the lifelong learning Project wi1 I be an entirely new <br />program both in the library and in San Marcos. The need for tutor training has been <br />apparent since the Hbrary first started its oouU education pr)Jram in 1984. We feel that <br />the estab I tshment of 6 forma\ tutor training pragram 'Hi \ \ be ..,U81 to the overs\ \ success of <br />the L ife1ong Learning Project. <br /> <br />A tutor training workshop on videocassette wi11 be purchased as wen as corresponding <br />materials for fifty tutors. A videocassette recorder w1JJ be purchased for use in conjuncUon <br />with the tutor training workshops. The v ideocæ5ette recorder wi 11 also be used for <br />individual tutoring sessions using videocassettes that the library already owns. <br /> <br />The PubHc Services Supervisor will be responsible for training the Project Coordinator. <br />The Project Coordinator wiIJ be trained as 8 tutor instructor using materials that <br />occompany the video tutor workshop. The Coordinator wH1 also attend relevant workshops <br />which are hosted regularly by area colleges, Hbraries, and literacy councils. <br /> <br />The Project Coordinator will be responsible for developing a publicity campaign to recruit <br />acìlitional volunteer tutors. The Project Coordinator wiJ1 be responsible for holding three <br />multi-part tutor training wor~shops. It is anticipated that at least 25 tutors wiJ] be <br />trained in the first year of the program. In addition, the Coordinator wi1J develop a manual <br />which wi1l make it possible for 6 volunteer to assume responsibHity for tutor training in <br />future years. <br /> <br />Providing workshops in basic life skiHs wi]] also be an entirely new pro;ram of service for <br />the library.
