Lifelong Learning Project
Program Narrative--Appendix C--page 3

San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District

512/353-2660

.

501 South LBJ Drive

. P.O. Box 1087

.

San Marcos, Texas 78667-1087

February 18, 1987

Stephanie Langenkamp, Director
San Marcos Public Library
P.O. Box 907
San Marcos, Texas 78667-0907

Dear Ms. Langenkamp:

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Josefina Tobias. I
am writing this letter on behalf of the 40% of adults in San Marcos
over 25 years of age who do not have a high school education. I
wish to officially declare my interest in and support of the federal
grant for disadvantaged persons which is being applied for by the
San Marcos Public Library. The implentation of a long range project
at the library that would include: 1) training for new tutors, 2)
the recruitment of many more students and volunteer tutors, and 3)
the purchase of new materials, will unmistakably provide the needed
services to a significant number of adults with less than a 12th
grade education.

As the Director of the Adult Education Night School at San Marcos
High School, I am keenly aware of the importance and benefits which
will accrue from this proposed project. May I also say that the pro-
ject's provisions for offering a series of life skills workshops is
of special interest and generates particular enthusiasm. As one who
is in constant contact with the city's special populations, I can
assure you that the library has the staunch support of the community
in the planning of this project.

Finally, having been an immigrant and having gone to night school
(adult education) to receive my G.E.D. before entering Southwest
Texas State University, I have a personal reason for wanting this
project to succeed. I want others who are now educationally disad-
vantaged to have the same chance to succeed as I did. I am confident
that your success in securing this federal grant will be forthcoming
and please know that all citizens who will profit from this project
thank you in advance for your time, efforts, and hard work.

Sincerely yours,

J9.~a::?::e~

Adult Education Night School
San Marcos Public Schools

JT/jp

Dedicated to Education. . .
