IX. LIFE THREATENING ILLNESS POLICY

A.

PURPOSE

To clarify the City of San Marcos' policies regarding

employees with life-threatening illnesses (For purposes
of this Section !'Life Threatening Illness" includes but

is not limited to AIDS, ARC, and positive HIV test).

B.

GUIDELINES

1.

The City of San Marcos recognizes that many employees
with life-threatening illnesses desire to lead normal

lives, which includes working as long as their health

permits.

Employees are encouraged to continue

working as long as they are able to perform and their

illness presents no threat to themselves, other

2.

employees, or the public.
Employees with life threatening illnesses are

entitled to the same employment benefits as are other

workers in the organization who have medical

3.

problems.
Supervisors and other employees should be aware that

continued employment for a worker who has a life
threatening illness may have a therapeutic value and

may contribute to the individual's remission or

recovery process.

-59-
