Action 4: Fund and champion beautification initiatives. <br />Implement the recent plan for spending remaining Beautification Initiative <br />grant funding. <br />o <br />Use remaining grant money as seed capital for City of San Marcos <br />quality of life plan. <br />o <br />Acquire additional funding from the Texas Department of <br />Transportation. <br /> <br />Continue to support the Code Enforcement Task Force to identify needs and <br />create best-practice, evidence-based solutions for residential and commercial <br />property maintenance code enforcement in San Marcos. <br />o <br />Focus efforts specifically on poorly-maintained residential rental <br />properties. <br />o <br />Partner with the City and County law enforcement offices in thes <br />efforts. <br /> <br />Host community dialogues to identify problems and concerns housi <br />code enforcement in Greater San Marcos. <br />o <br />Source potential funds to increase the number of code-enforcement <br />staff in the City of San Marcos and consider staggering staff wo <br />hours to extend the period that enforcement personnel can addres <br />citizen concerns. <br />o <br />In conjunction with the City of <br />San Marcos Neighborhood <br />Services and current Graffiti <br />Abatement Initiative, create an <br />Operation Fixing Broken <br />Windows or similar campaign <br />to encourage rental property <br />owners to maintain properties <br />adequately. <br />o <br />Pursue the possibility of <br />assessing residential properties in key neighborhoods of need to <br />identify uninhabitable buildings for potential repair or <br />redevelopment. <br />o <br />Continue to expand the scope of the Code Enforcement Task Force <br />where appropriate in order to address other community concerns, <br />including loitering, panhandling, etc. <br /> <br />Build and strengthen local commitments to maintaining attractive <br />neighborhoods. <br />Final Strategy <br />September 2009 41 <br /> <br />
