<br />hIfIEREAS, a baseball progr8ll1 for boys was instituted at the
<br />Memorial Recreation Park in 1953, during which season a total of
<br />four teams participated in a plant consisting of a playing field.
<br />backstop, bleachers, outfield fence and lights, all of such facili-
<br />ties ,laving been erected through efforts of the San Marcos Liorls
<br />Club; and,
<br />
<br />WHEREAS. in 1953 many San Marcos citizens contributed the stun
<br />of $3,340.57 toward the support of this program. out of which
<br />$3.125.11 was spent in the erection of facilities,purchase of UJliforms
<br />and equipment, payment of salaries to supervisors and umpires, etc.,
<br />leaving a net gain of $2l5.1l; and
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, in 1954 the number of teams was increased to eight,
<br />includir,[; six Little Lea'!:Ue and tHO Pony Leag.le teams (the latter
<br />actually playing at Kyle), the facilities being improved by the addi-
<br />tion of bleachers, dUJ-outs. field levelin;;; and installation of a
<br />permanent public-address system, the total contributions from the
<br />public amountins to $1,5&3.13 with expenses of $1,822.99 resultlllg
<br />in a net loss of $159.86; and
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, in 1955 the number of teams was increased to eighteen,
<br />i'lcludlllg t,.elve Little League and six Babe Ruth Lea&'Ue (four of
<br />the latter teams being from out of the city), additional facilities
<br />being a new set of bleachers and a fence all aroUJld the playing field.
<br />the latter being constructed with municipal funds and labor, the
<br />total individual contributions amounting to $4,083.02 l'l1tlt expenses
<br />of $3,208.40 resulting in a net gain of $874.62; and
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, in 1956 the number of teams remained at eighteen
<br />(although the rosters were increased to at least fifteen boys per
<br />team). including twelve Little League and six Babe Ruth League (nTQ
<br />of the latter teams being from out of the city. additional facilities
<br />being a new playing field with a fence around part of same, three
<br />backstops includil1g one for the new field and two for practice sessions,
<br />the total public contributions amounting to $3,166.31 with expenses of
<br />$4.196.99 resultinZ iu a net loss o[ $1.030.68j and .

<br />w'ImREAS. the program has nOH grmvn to inc lude more than four
<br />hundred participating youn9sters and was viewed by an estimated
<br />eight thousand faus in 1950, such figures. based upon increased
<br />school enrollment, being expected to increase with each passing yearj
<br />and

<br />'~{EREAS, said baseball program, from its inception,has been
<br />sUper~ised and sponsored by the Lions Club, such organ izat im being
<br />Ir:ore than willing to continue such supervision and sponsorship; and
<br />
<br />\'IlmREAS, the Lio11S Club has fowld itself unable to bear the
<br />financial burden now commensurate with the demands of this ever-
<br />i,1creasing project, although, in conjunction with the Rotary Club,
<br />the Kiwanis Club, the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Business and
<br />Professional \,iomens Club, it will continue to raise operational ex-
<br />penses, amounting to approximately $3.000.00 in 1951, over and above
<br />the fWlds requested of the City of San }larcos as set out below; and
<br />
<br />llHEREAS, unless considerable financial aid be forthcoming from
<br />the City of San Marcos, it will be impossible that the program con-
<br />tinue even at its present level:

<br />THEREFORE, we the undersigned citizens of San Marcos, IlIOst
<br />respectfully petition the City Council that it provide funds, labor
<br />and materials for the follOWing purposes:
