regular meeting, January 9, 1967

page two

towns in the County were interested in acquiring the
collection of historical items, if San Marcos did not
provide an adequate museum in:the near future. The
col iection has been stored in various places, and
moved several times. Alderman Korff said he might be
able to provide space if the present location had to
be vacated on short notice. The Mayor asked Dr. Pool
to work with the City Manager on this matter. Mrs.
Wyatt informed the Council that money had been provid-
ed to place an historical marker at, or near, the site
of the first house in San Marcos. In th i s connect ion,
Mrs . Wyatt rem i nded Counc i I men of their action in 1964,
in which Union Street was changed to Moon Street,
Olmos to Sessom, and a proposed new street to be named
Merr j'man, honor i ng the founders of San Marcos. She
stated that these changes had not been made. I n order
to get the marker, which would be placed in the 300
block of "Moon" Street, an exact address would have to
be prov i,ded. The Mayor directed the City Manager to
have the street names changed on the markers, In
accordance with the Counci I'~ action in 1964. David
Dai I~y, Chairman of fhe Museum Committee, and Mrs. J.H.
Mi Il.er, Secretary of the Hays County Historical Survey
Committee, spoke on the matter under discussion. Mrs.
Mi Iler emphasized the benefit interesting historical
siteswo~ldbe to tourism in San Marcos.

Mr. L.O. Backus, owne'r', of Don's Cue Club, came before
the Counci J to protest .its action in issuing a permit
to Burke A. Hargrove to operate another bil liard club
in San Marcos. The matter was discussed, with reference
to requirements of the ordinance governing operation of
bi Iliard" tables in San Marcos. Mr. Backus asked the
Counci I to rescind its action, and deny a permit to
Mr. Hargrove. Alderman Whittenberg said he felt the
Council's action in granting the permit had been hasty,
and moved that the Counci I rescind the action, and the
permit to Hargrove not be issued. Alderman Damon second-
ed the motion. The City Manager cal led to the attention
of the Counci I that in the event Mr. Hargrove had entered
into a contract for a location in the proposed new shopp-
ing center, the City might be liable for damages, if
the Counci I withdrew the permit. It was agreed by com-
mon consent that the matter should be tabled unti I the
next meeting.

Two sealed bids on a used tractor loader were received by
the Mayor. The Mayor read aloud a bid of $6800 from Girard
Machinery Company; and one from Holt Machinery for $9800.
The City Manager said the used equipment offered in the bid
by Girard had been checked by Martin Drgac, City mechanic,
and Lee Crayton, Sanitation Superintendent. They found the
tractor loader to be in good condition. Alderman Pool moved
that the low bid of_$6800 entered by Girard, be accepted.
Alderman Damon seconded the motion and on rol I cal I, the
following vote was recorded:

AYE;
NAY:

Damon, Froh, Korff, Pool, Whittenberg
None

The ,Mayor declared the motion carried.

I

I

I
