Mrs. Irene Melton was spokesman for the <br />signers of the pet it ion. The fact that Purgatory <br />Street is in the GNRP area, and would be paved as <br />part of the project, was brought out in the dis- <br />cussion. The Mayor said the City Manager woul~ <br />discuss the City's paving problems at a later time <br />in the meeting. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The Mayor read a petition for paving of Elm Street, <br />signed by Miss Mary Sue ~aynes. Further discussion <br />of the paving program was deferred unti I Mr. Wolff <br />could present a proposal for handling the problem. <br /> <br />Jim Wal Is Was spokesman for a delegation from <br />College Courts Addition, who had sent a petition to <br />the Counci I requesting better traffic control in their <br />neighborhood. Leo Chafin also spoke to the question, <br />saying Holland Street had become a thoroughfare, in- <br />stead of a residential street. The Mayor cal led on <br />Po lice Ch i ef W. A.D ia I, who had made a study of the <br />traffic problem on Hblland. He made a number of <br />recommendations, includihg a different system of <br />schoo I bu s stops. r t was brought out I n the discuss i on <br />that the south side of Hal land Street was inside the <br />City Limits; whi Ie the north side was not, posing a <br />problem of police jurisdiction. Mr. Whittenberg moved <br />that the City annex al I of Hol land Street not within the <br />City Limits. Dr. Pool~econded the motion and on roll <br />cal" the fol lowing vote was recorded; <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />AYE; Craddock, Damon, Flores, Korff, Pool, Serur, <br />Whittenberg <br />NAY; None <br /> <br />The Mayor declared the motion carried. <br /> <br />Mr. Whittenberg moved that the Police Department be <br />instructed to send a patrol car to Hol land Street, when <br />possible, at the hours of heaviest traffic in the morning <br />and afternoon. Dr. Pool seconded the motion. In the <br />discussion, the City Manager pointed out there were other <br />areas ~hat had congested traffic problems more serious than <br />Holland Street. If patro I cars were ass i gned on regu I ar <br />duty, morn ing and afternoon, it wou I d "hamstr i ng" the <br />Police Department. On questioning by Mr. Damon, the Police <br />Chief said two cars were on duty in the morning, and two in <br />the afternoon.
