<br />JU 'c}- <br /> <br />regular meeting, august 14, 1967 <br /> <br />page four <br /> <br />The Mayor declared the motion carried. <br /> <br />The Mayor reported on a workshop held with the U.S. <br />Corps of Engineers to discuss informally the Blanco- <br />San Marcos Flood Control Plan. He said the Corps <br />had requested a "Letter of Intent" from the City so <br />work on the plan could proceed. Copies of the sug- <br />gested letter had been distributed to members of the <br />Counc i I in advance of the meet i n~g. The' Mayor stated <br />that Corps Engineers had assured the Council that this <br />letter did not commit the City to any financial par- <br />ticipation or to complete agreement with the plan. <br />Dr. Pool mdved that the I~tter of intent be authorized. <br />Mr. Korff seconded the mdtion and on 1'01 I cal I the <br />fdllowlng vote was recorded: ' <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />AYE: Craddock, Damon, Flores, Korff, Pool, Serur, <br />Whittenberg <br /> <br />NAY: None <br /> <br />The Mayor declared the motion carried. Dr. Craddock mo.ved <br />that City Mariager Richa~d G. He stated that the tentative evaluation of <br />taxes for San Marcos was $40,000,000. With a tax rate <br />of $2.00,rep~esenting a 35~ reduction, ,a contingency <br />fund of $23,000 could be provided in the Budget, Mr. Bean <br />said. The Counci I gave common consent for the Budget to <br />be prepared on the basis of a $2.00 tax rate. August 28 <br />was set for the Publ ic Hearing on the Budget. <br /> <br />The Mayor introduced a discussion of the City Sales Tax, <br />and recommended that on the first legal date possible <br />(August 28), an election be cal led for October 3. A <br />general discussion fol lowed. Councilman Whittemberg <br />stated he felt the sale~tax was vitally necessary as a <br />means to provide the additional revenue to meet the ~eeds <br />of San Marcos. He moved that on August 28 the Council <br />call an election on the City Sales Tax for October 3. <br />There was no second to the motion. Councilman Dam6n ex- <br />pressed the opinion that it might be premature to call I <br />the election at that time. Bob Barton of uThe Citizenu <br />was recogni zed by the Mayor. He stated he was def,i n,i te- <br />Iy opposed to call ing the election unti I after the results <br />of A~stin's ejection were known. Councilman Korff said <br />the Counc i I should have a work session and then Ca lithe <br />election. "We need the sales taxU, he said. Dr. Craddock <br />said the Council sho~ld have factual material on the Sales <br />Tax and the public should be made aware of the facts before <br />an election is called. Mr. Flores said he favored a sales <br />
