D:>ing the group work in the school atnDsphere in close contact <br />with the students' peers, teachers, and school counselors has consistently resultlm <br />ein IIDre effective sessions. 'lhey have also served a se.cond very 11nportent :f\mct~pn <br />of making the .(YSB) IIDre, visible to, the school. 'lhey are able to see IIDre '~losely <br />what we are doing and the positive results. This is a vital aspect of our program, <br />awareness of what we do and that we ~ successful/to both the public and to the <br />agencies we wrk with. <br />'lhe second phase is the recreational program. This is structured so 1 t will <br />enhance and support the main objectives ,of the. program, through the cowseling <br />componet. Activities are structured so they develop' character, leadership qualities. <br />and responsibility. Certain phases of this componet are used as incentives to gain <br />full cooperation from the clients inlthel"helping parts",of the program, such as <br />group counseling, reading and tutorial sessions, ect.Sincethe participation of <br />the clients is strictly voltm.tary; ,the incentive program, along. with a strong .staff I <br />to client relationship is very importent. <br />Third, we have a well developed vOlunteer wrk force. Currently we have four <br />hall'time (20hr./wk.) from the Social Work, El:l.ucation, and law Enforcement <br />departments of Southwest Texas State, University. They will be used to expand on <br />. the am:Jtm.t of in school. group counseling and to help IOOIli tel' wrk done by less <br />experienced volwteers. We use ~ty'.of.these category voltm.teers 'Nbo w.rk about <br />five hours a week, doing tutorial wrk and acting as adult 'Jrodels for the, clients. <br />'Ibis spring we have a new program" consisting of ten volwteers from the special <br />education department that are specially trained in teaching reading comprehension <br />to predominately spanish speaking children. Again the counseling componet is evid <br />in that during tutoring we also wrkon any social inteaction problems which nay <br />hindering academic progress. This, includes. work. with both the client and teachers <br />wilen specific interpersonel problems. exist. <br />We also have several support programs \oIh1ch fiucuate with the needs of the <br />program. We. have two. work programs. for .young and for older boys.
