representing millions of dollars being spent. Federal grants are not free. Our children will pay
• for them. As for Wonder World, just tell us what it's going to cost. The same thing with
McCarty Lane, watch the overrides and do not let this happen.
Griffin Spell, 1610 N. IH -35, Apt. 321, thanked the City Council for the Smart Code. He likes it.
This is a win -win scenario to protect the integrity and character of neighborhoods and also give
property owners the tools they need to grow their business. At the end of the day, it will be a
good thing.
8. City Council Reports
A. Mayor Susan Narvaiz will report on the recent ICSC trip, Stennis Center
Conference and CAMPO.
Mayor Narvaiz reported that Joe Cantalupo has resigned from CAMPO. Also, TXDOT provided
them with an update to alleviate congestion issues on IH -35. They are proposing to reduce the
toll fee for trucks on 130 to help free up IH -35. The public will see more messaging boards
indicating the time to get from point a to b, along with alternate route options. CAMPO is
deciding what to do with federal monies. They are looking at the projects on the books and how
long they have been there. They will distribute the money equally geographically. She has been
asked to serve on the Technical Advisory Committee, which will oversee federal and legal
requirements for spending federal money.
The Mayor next reported on the Stennis Center. She was asked to participate in a conference of
elected women officials from the southern states. The topic was how to overcome partisan
divided governments, and how to work together at all levels. An interesting statistic presented
was that less women are participating in government. There are only five women governors, and
less women are entering in at lower levels. In an attempt to encourage better participation, they
are looking at women ages 45 and older to consider entering into this field. They also want to
target young women and educate them about the opportunities that exist at all levels, including
appointed positions.
Her final report was on the ICSC Conference, which is more than shopping centers. The City's
goal is to stay close to what is happening in the retail industry. They learned that so much is
going on in the country, what is going on in the market place and what people are investing.
People are talking about where they will invest across the country in 2011 and 2012.
9. Staff Progress Reports
A. Update on I -35 Mowing
B. Update on construction of McCarty Lane and the County's planned construction of
Loop 110
C. CIP Update
•
RM061510 Minutes Page 3
