Not shown
on this table, however, is based aircraft
in 1985 which was 100. This figure was
not used due to lack of population
information for the city of San Marcos
for 1985. This indicates that the airport
experienced a trend similar to the
national trend.

The early to mid 1980's witnessed a
surge of aircraft ownership, while the
late 1980's and early 1990's experienced
a general decrease due to a slowing
economy and aircraft liability law
changes. In 1998, however, based
aircraft climbed back to 124 which
follows national trends of increased
aircraft manufacturing and the steady
increase in aircraft ownership. In 2000,

based aircraft increased by 103, nearly
doubling which can be directly related
to the shift of Austin's airports and the
closing of Austin Executive Airport.

San Marcos Municipal based aircraft
per 1,000 city of San Marcos residents
has fluctuated between a low of 1.20 in
1980 to a high of 5.34 in 2000. This
trend is very similar to that experienced
at general aviation airports across the
country as the economy and legislation
suppressed aircraft ownership in the
late 80's. However, the trend has since
reversed itself as new legislation has
opened the doors to aircraft production
and the economy has been strong.

Two forecasts were produced using the
ratio of based aircraft per 1,000 city of
San Marcos residents. First, a constant

2-14
