need to be enacted that would
discourage mixing of aircraft and
automobile traffic.

Aircraft Wash Facility

Presently, a number of airports are
constructing or considering the
development of an aircraft owner
maintenance facility to meet tougher
environmental requirements for
hazardous material handling and
disposal. These areas typically provide
for the collection of used aircraft oil and
other hazardous materials and provide
a covered area for aircraft washing and
light maintenance. The development of
a similar facility at San Marcos
Municipal Airport could reduce
environmental exposure and provide an
additional revenue source which could
be used to amortize development costs.

SUPPORT FACILITIES

Aviation Fuel Storage

The city of San Marcos owns and
operates two above-ground storage
tanks for Jet-A and one 100LL Avgas
storage. Fuel storage totals 24,000
gallons and includes 12,000 gallons for
Jet-A fuel and 12,000 gallons for Avgas
fuel in separate tanks. Berry Aviation
owns and operates two 10,000 gallon
storage tanks, one for Jet A and one for
100LL.

Fuel storage requirements are typically
based upon maintaining a two week
supply of fuel during an average month,
however, more frequent deliveries can
reduce the fuel storage capacity
requirement.

3-22

Future Avgas and Jet-A storage
requirements for the airport based upon
a two week supply during the peak
month will likely exceed the existing
storage capacities. It is anticipated that
additional Jet-A fuel storage will be
needed through the planning period.
Avgas storage is anticipated to be
adequate until intermediate term
planning horizon activity levels.
Facility planning will consider the
installation of another two 12,000
gallon storage tanks, one for Jet A fuel
and one 12,000 gallon storage tank for
A vgas fuel. The construction ofthe new
tanks could be by the City or a FBO.

Automobile Access

The airport is provided direct access
from State Highway 21 (Airport
Highway) to the west by Airport Drive.
Airport Drive is a two-lane, asphalt
road until it reaches the terminal
building parking lot. As it continues
east, it becomes a one-lane road and
continues to the apron adjacent the
CAF. Airport Drive is aligned in
somewhat a circuitous manner.
Analysis to be conducted in the next
chapter will consider providing a more
direct road and will attempt to provide
better access in the eastern portion of
the terminal area.

Airport Drainage And
Sanitary Sewer

As discussed in the first chapter, the
airport is served by an antiquated
sanitary sewer and drainage system
originally constructed by the military.
The sanitary sewer is constructed of
tile. The City has recently begun study
