<br />Sec. 6.169. Quarantine or testing. <br /> <br />(a) The owner of any animal that is reported to be rabid or that the owner knows or suspects to <br />have rabies or to have exposed any person to rabies shall submit the animal to the local <br />fleal:tflrabies control authority for quarantine or testing. <br /> <br />(b) No person shall remove from the city limits or kill or cause to be killed any rabid animal, any <br />animal suspected of having been exposed to rabies or any animal that has bitten a human or is <br />suspected to have bitten a human, except as provided in this article. <br /> <br />(c) Any animal reported to the local fl:e.al.tftrabies control authority under section 6.168, whose <br />owner cannot be located, may be impounded for quarantine in the city animal shelter. <br /> <br />(d) The quarantine may occur at any of the following locations, subject to approval by the local <br />fleal:tflrabies control authority: <br /> <br />(1) A veterinary hospital. <br /> <br />(2) The city animal shelter. <br /> <br />(3) A kennel holding a current, valid city permit. <br /> <br />(e) Quarantine shall occur for at least ten days for dogs, cats, and animals of the orders <br />Marsupialia, Insectivora, Rodentia, Lagomorpha and Xenarthra. <br /> <br />(f) All animals not mentioned in subsection (e) of this section but reported in accordance with <br />section 6.168 will be humanely killed and sent to the state department of health for rabies testing <br />or quarantined for 30 days, at the discretion of the local healthrabies control authority. <br /> <br />(g) The owner of any animal quarantined in the city animal shelter shall pay an observation fee <br />established by the city council, in addition to all impoundment fees assessed under section 6.136, <br />regardless of the ultimate disposition of the animal. <br /> <br />Sec. 6.170. Disposition of quarantined animals. <br /> <br />(a) If it is determined by a veterinarian that a quarantined animal shows the clinical signs of <br />rabies, the local fleal:tflrabies control authority will humanely destroy the animal. <br /> <br />(b) If the animal dies or is destroyed while in quarantine, the h:ealthrabies control authority will <br />submit the head or brain of the animal for testing to the nearest laboratory of the state department <br />of health. <br /> <br />(c) The local fleal:tflrabies contro 1 authority will direct the disposition of any animal found to be <br />infected with rabies. <br /> <br />17 <br />
