November 20, 1999

Parks and Recreation Watershed Protection Division
630 East Hopkins St.
San Marcos, TX 78666

Dear Ms. Solum:

The Pride Center of the San Marcos High School is a special program that works with
closely with students that require extra attention. This program has involved students in
many projects that enhance their understanding of the various subjects taught by San
Marcos High School. With assistance from the City of San Marcos, the Biology class of
the Pride Center will playa leading role in restoring the wetland area along the segment
of the San Marcos River that borders the proposed Wildscape. The students will build
and set up nesting boxes for migrating waterfowl, remove exotic aquatic plants and
replant natives, and sample the fauna to determine the current species, create habitat that
will attract native species, and research each project to ensure its success. Future classes
of the Pride Center will be involved with the wetland to maintain the area, such as upkeep
of the nesting boxes, continued removal of exotics and creation of new habitats.

This experience will help the students at Pride School to understand biology in a manner
that a textbook could never accomplish, establish relationships with professionals in their
community, and take pride in a great work acc;omplished. All expenses, such as the
purchase of native plants, and materials for nesting boxes will be provided by other
agencies.

We are excited to be a part of this on-going, dynamic outdoor classroom!

27 d/L

Ze Wilson
Biology Instructor

Parks & Recreation · 630 East Hopkins · San Marcos, Texas 78666 · 512/393-8400 · FAX 512/353-7273
