(. I;

I

Mitigation Action Fire-4 - By installing Dry Hydrants in developing rural areas both existing
and future buildings can be protected until a permanent water distribution system with fire
hydrants can be installed.

Mitigation Action T-l - Constructing safe rooms in future school and public buildings can help
save lives.

Mitigation Action T-2 - Building code and building standards improvements allow
communities to require future buildings to be constructed to be:
Tornado and high wind resistant
Better roofing systems to reduce hail damage
Better foundation systems to resist expansive soils, earthquakes, and subsidence.
Better energy efficient to reduce impacts from extreme heat and winter storms
More fire resistant buildings and roofs
Better electrical systems to minimize lightning strike damage

Mitigation Action D-l - By improved drought management planning future buildings will not
be hampered by water rationing, water shortage and water supply interruption.

Mitigation Action D-2 - By constructing water system improvements there will be adequate
water supply and pressure for fire fighting for both existing and future buildings.

I

Mitigation Action Heat-l - The Extreme Heat hazard is also mitigated for future buildings in
Action T-2, "Building Code Improvements" with building code and building standards
improvements that make future buildings more energy efficient thereby reducing energy costs.

Building Code improvements may include minimum "R" values for building insulation;
requiring thermopane or insulated glass for commercial and residential construction; requiring
energy audits of new commercial and industrial structures; requires energy inspections and
certifications prior to issuing a "certificate of occupancy" for a residential structure. It is
anticipated that this action should be coordinated with the Capital Area Planning Council
(CAPCO) and possibly patterned after the North Central Texas Council of Governments "Safe,
Clean and Green" campaign (see www.nctcog.org) to encourage green roofs and energy
efficient structures.

Mitieation Actions identified for Individual Communities:

A total of 27 Mitigation Actions were identified.
