Sector Two Chapter 2 - Today
Transportation
Existing Thoroughfares
The existing system of streets and thoroughfares in Sector Two have developed in
response to historical development patterns and natural constraints in the area. The major
thoroughfares that serve traffic into and through Sector Two are Bishop Street and Ranch
Road 12. The remaining streets in Sector Two are collectors that serve to move traffic
within the area and to connect with the major thoroughfares. Bishop Street presents a
unique planning challenge, since it serves as both a neighborhood street lined with houses
and a major thoroughfare that bisects the area. Ranch Road 12 serves as a regional
highway, funneling traffic through San Marcos. Traffic, especially along Ranch Road 12,
is expected to increase in the future.
All streets in Sector Two are city owned and maintained, with the exception of Ranch
Road 12, which is state owned and maintained. All traffic signals in Sector Two are
owned and maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation.
Traffic Volumes
The Environment and Engineering Department periodically conducts traffic volume
counts on city-owned streets. Traffic volumes represent 24 -hour weekday counts. The
traffic counts in Sector Two included:
Location
Bishop Street northwest of Hopkins Street
Craddock Ave south of Ranch Road 12
Bishop Street southeast of Franklin Drive
Franklin Drive southwest of Ranch Road 12
Franklin Drive northeast of Furman Avenue
Perkins Street southeast of Franklin Drive
Franklin Drive southwest of Bishop Street
Oct /Nov 1995
Nov 2000
81368
81362
41667
61475
41085
51539
21745
31333
11113
11409
738
999
144
1,146
The Texas Department of Transportation conducts traffic volume counts on state -owned
thoroughfares.
