The Sector Two Plan calls for safe bicycling and pedestrian routes on all major streets in
order to connect neighborhoods with desirable destinations, including parks, schools, and
shopping areas. This includes providing safe crossings of major streets and appropriately
designed intersections. The Plan also acknowledges the need for new development to be
designed not only to accommodate automobile traffic, but also pedestrians, bicyclists, and
transit users.
Can anything be done about speeding and cut - through traffic on Franklin Street?
The Sector Two Plan recommends traffic calming measures on Franklin Street to reduce
traffic speeds and to discourage through traffic. The Plan recommends that the City
Engineering Department develop a recommended traffic calming solution for Franklin
Street. In addition to the traffic calming measures on Franklin, the potential widening of
Craddock Ave will tend to encourage traffic to take Craddock and discourage traffic on
Franklin.
Why is the city considering widening Craddock Avenue?
Craddock Ave is a `minor arterial' and serves both neighborhood traffic and local
through traffic. New development in the area and general traffic growth in the City are
expected to increase the amount of traffic on this street. A study is currently underway to
assess the future needs and to develop a preferred option for accommodating future
projected traffic and addressing safety concerns along Craddock Ave.
How will the potential widening of Craddock Avenue impact neighborhood
character and pedestrian safety?
An appropriately designed roadway can accommodate future auto traffic while
addressing pedestrian and bicycle safety, as well as neighborhood character and
aesthetics. All of the current options for future improvements to Craddock Ave include
sidewalks and a bike path. In addition, other design features will be considered that
address pedestrian and bicyclist safety. How the road will impact neighborhood
character and aesthetics is also an issue that has been raised at previous meetings and will
be considered in the design process.
What is planned for the new intersection of Craddock and Bishop? How will this
impact the surrounding neighborhoods?
The Sector Two Plan shows this area as `Mixed Use'. This intersection is envisioned as a
small -scale mixed use neighborhood center with a mixture of `Neighborhood
Commercial' and `Medium Density Residential' uses. MDR uses would be limited to
single - family townhouses or limited amounts of 2nd floor apartments above the
commercial uses.
City Council Meeting (June 25, 2001)
