Chapter 2 Sector Three Today
The Natural Environment
Geology
Sector Three, along with Sectors One, Two and Eight, is located in the Edwards Plateau.
This area is hilly and characterized by rocky, shallow soil. These areas sit above the
Balcones Escarpment.
Topography
Land elevations in Sector Three vary from 829 feet above sea level near the intersection
of West Sierra Circle and East Sierra Circle to 641 feet above sea level at the end of Oak
Ridge Drive. The Sector Three Topography map is presented on the following page.
Edwards Aquifer
The Edwards Aquifer is the water - bearing underground network of porous and
honeycombed limestone formation of the Edwards Plateau. It is the source of water for
San Marcos, as well as over 1.5 million other Texans, and is the source of the San Marcos
River. The majority of Sector Three is located in the transition zone of the aquifer. The
transition zone is an area where faults, fractures, and other geologic features present
possible avenues for recharge of surface water into the aquifer. The remainder of Sector
Three is in the recharge zone, where fractures, caves and porous limestone provides a
path for water to run from the surface into the artesian area of the aquifer.
Watersheds
A watershed is an area that drains into a river or creek. The northern half of Sector Three
lies within the Sink Creek watershed while the southern half lies within the San Marcos
River watershed.
Floodplains
There are no floodways or Foodplains located in Sector Three.
00)
