Ten of <br /> the available slots for each trip will be set aside for at risk, low income or disadvantaged youth <br /> that will be sponsored by Youth Service Bureau, San Marcos Independent School District, <br /> Housing Authority and the Mitchell Center. The remaining ten slots will be available to the <br /> public on a first come first serve basis and will have a nominal fee charged to help 6ff set the cost <br /> of the program. <br /> The San Marcos Outdoor Adventures Program will be provided through the City of San <br /> Marcos Parks and Recreation Department. The program curriculum will be designed and <br /> implemented by the Parks and Recreation staff. Staff for the program includes the Recreation <br /> Manger, RecreaìÍonal Specialist in charge of Youth Activities, Biologists from the River <br /> Stewardship Project and various specialty course instructors. The program will work in <br /> conjunction with both community service groups and the local school district to reach the youth <br /> of the city. In this grant we are requesting funds to help purchase the equipment needed to start <br /> { <br /> this ambitious program. It is our goal to establish a program that provides both an educational <br /> and recreational opportunity that may not be available to some of the youth in our city. <br /> Project Justification <br /> The San Marcos Outdoor Adventures Program is an exciting program designed to introduce the <br /> youth of San Marcos to the wonders of nature though our State Parks. The goals of this <br /> program are to provide the youth of the city with an opportunity to learn more about our <br /> environment, State Parks and to experience new positive recreational activities. Currently no <br /> similar project exists in San Marcos. The program is designed to allow the youth of our city that <br /> might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience activities such as camping and hiking to <br /> participate and enjoy nature. The program will have six weekend trips and one day trip for the <br /> mentally and physically challenged. We plan to utilize seven of our State Parks for this program. <br /> Each weekend trip will have a different theme and will have room for 20 participants. Ten at <br /> risk, disadvantaged or needy youth will be sponsored by various community service groups and <br /> the school district.
