/¡,Lr
remaining available slots will be provided on a first-come first serve basis to the general public
and have a nominal fee to defray operational expenses. We feel that opening the program to both
the general public and sponsored participants will help us to increase our services and the number
of people served in the community while providing a more diverse cultural and econoITÚc
background in our participants. The day trip to the LB.J. Wildflower Center in Austin will
provide various activities for ten physically or mentally challenged individuals to learn more
about their environment. The program has an educational theme that will provide the
participants with basic outdoor skills and environmental education. As the City of San Marcos
continues to grow, it is becoITÚng more important to develop recreational programs that provide
new and constructive activities for the youth of our City to participate in. The age group that we
have selected is especially hard to reach and we hope that by providing them with this
opportunity we can provide them with skills and an appreciation for the environment that under
normal circumstances they would not receive. With assistance from the, Community Outdoor
Outreach Program we feel that we can establish the foundations for a program that can continue
to grow in the future as a permanent program in the Parks and Recreation Department.
Priority Funding Elements
The Outdoor Adventure Program will consist of six weekend trips through out the year.
We will take 20 yoÜth ages 14-17 years old on eac~ weekend adventure. One day trip will be
- scheduled for ten physically/mentally challenged youth. There are 1696 students at the San
Marcos High School, of those students 580 have been identified as at risk or 34 % of the student
population. Through our program we will reach 130 youth per year and will be able to reach
22% of at-risk youth in our community.
The San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department has several established partnerships
through out the community. \Ve will utilize five partnerships to meet the goals of this program.
The following agencies will help make this program possible: San Marcos Consolidated
Independent School District, Youth Service Bureau, San Marcos Youth Shelter, San Marcos
Housing Authority, and the Mitchell Center. These organizations will nominate at-risk youth to
participate in our program. They will help us identify youth who would not have the opportunity
