<br /> jurisdiction of the city (hereafter referenced as ETJ) or <br /> within the city limits. <br /> THE SAMPLE AND THE SURVEY <br /> A random sample of San Marcos residents was drawn <br /> using three sources: the city's current listing of utility <br /> customers, the most recent phone book available for the city, <br /> and the university's fall listing of student residencies. <br /> From these lists a sampl~ of l400 names was selected, each of <br /> whom received a letter from Mayor Kathy Morris dated November <br /> 1, 1990 (including both English and Spanish versions) <br /> informing them of the study, insuring them of its legitimacy, <br /> and urging their participation. <br /> A team of researchers from Southwest Texas state <br /> University (SWTSU) under faculty supervision conducted <br /> personal phone calls to each selected resident in the first <br /> two weeks of November. The phone calls were designed to <br /> remind each resident of their selection for the survey, urge <br /> their participation, and inform them of the details of survey <br /> delivery and pick-up. A Spanish-speaking member of the <br /> University research team was available at all times for those <br /> residents desiring a Spanish-speaking contact. The <br /> University team delivered the survey forms to the students <br /> and ETJ residents on November 9 and to city residents on <br /> November 16. The bulk of surveys were collected the weeks of <br /> 2 <br />
