<br /> 227 <br /> RAMON LUCIO, RIO VISTA, RIO VISTA ANNEX, AND BICENTENNIAL <br /> PARKS RECREATION DEVELOPMENT <br /> TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION 20 <br /> LANDSCAPING <br /> planted in the open will not be accepted. The minimum acceptable <br /> sizes of all plants, measured before pruning, with branches in <br /> normal position, shall conform to the measurements specified in the <br /> drawings. Plants larger in size than specified may be used with the <br /> approval of the Engineer, but the use of larger plants will make <br /> no change in contract price. If the use of larger plants is <br /> approved, the ball of earth or spread of roots shall be increased <br /> proportionately. <br /> c. Digging up, wrapping, and handling: Plants shall be dug <br /> and prepared for shipment in a manner that will not cause any <br /> damage to the branches, shape, root system, and future development <br /> of the plants after replanting. <br /> (1) Balling and burlapped plants shall be adequately <br /> balled with firm naturAl balls of soil in sizes as shown on the <br /> drawings. The balled soil shalL be that in which the plant has <br /> previously been growing. Balls shall be firmly wrapped with burlap <br /> or substitute approved cloth. No balled plant shall be planted if <br /> the ball is cracked, mushy, or broken or if the stem is loose in <br /> the ball, either before or during the process of planting. Balled <br /> plants shall be lifted and handled from the bottom of the ball. <br /> ( 2) Container-grown plants shall have been grown in cans. <br /> Plants shall have sufficient roots to hold earth together intact <br /> after removal from. containersw,j..thout being rootbound. <br /> (3) Plants shall be protected ft:om freezing, overheating, <br /> drying out, SW18CAld, flooding, or other injury. The balls of <br /> balled plants that cannot be planted immediately on delivery shall <br /> be well protected wi th soil or other acceptable material. The <br /> Contractor shall safeguard the unplanted plants during freezing <br /> weather by inside storage and other precautionary measuJ:es. <br /> ( 4) Plant-material labels: For the purpose of inspection <br /> and plant identification, durable, legible labels stating in <br /> weather-resistant ink the correct plant name and size, as specified <br /> in the list of required plants, shall be securely attached to all <br /> plants, bundles, and containers of plant material delivered at the <br /> planting site. <br /> 20-06 PLANTS REQUIRED: <br /> 20-3 <br />
