Planting pit sizes: Minimum depth and diameter or width of <br /> planting pits for trees shall be as shown on the drawings. <br /> e. Disposal of excess soil: Acceptable excess excavated <br /> topsoil shall be wasted uniformly over nearby low or rough lawn <br /> areas, or otherwise disposed of as approved by the Engineer. Excess <br /> soils not required or not suitable for above usage shall be <br /> disposed of off site. <br /> f. Setting plants: Except as otherwise specified, plants shall <br /> be planted in pits and shall be set at the level shown in the <br /> details on the drawings. Trees shall be set plumb and rigidly <br /> braced in position until the soil has been tamped to avoid air <br /> voids around the baIlor roots. Plants shall be planted in approved <br /> topsoil, as specified herein, which shall be thoroughly settled by <br /> watering and tamping to eliminate air voids. To compensate for <br /> shrinkage, the finished grade of topsoil prior to watering shall <br /> be fixed at an elevation 10 percent of the fill depth higher than <br /> the des ired finished grade. To facilitate watering, each plant <br /> shall be set approximately 4 inches below the grade of the existing <br /> ground surface to form a saucer as shown on the drawings. <br /> (1) Balling plants: Balled-and-burlapped plants shall be <br /> placed on a minimum of 6 inches of compact topsoil, as shown on the <br /> drawings, that has been tamped to eliminate air voids prior to <br /> placing plants. Plants shall then be placed in the plant pit, and <br /> a commercial root st1mulant shall be applied according to label <br /> instructions. Topsoil shall be tamped to fill all voids under the <br /> base and around the ball to the height of one-half the depth of the <br /> ball. Cloth, ropes, wires, and other wrapping material shall be cut <br /> away from the top of the balls, and backfilling shall be completed. <br /> In no case shall cloth be pulled out from under balls. <br /> (2) Container-grown plants: Containers shall be opened, <br /> and the plants carefully removed so that the earth around the roots <br /> of the plants remain unbroken. Plants shall then be planted in the <br /> same manner as balled plants. <br /> g. Staking of trees: <br /> (1) Trees shall be staked as they are planted with three <br /> ( 3) stakes and guy wires as specified under materials, and as shown <br /> on the drawings. <br /> 20-6 <br />
