Excavation for the pedestrian bridqes shall comply with the
details and the elevations shown on the drawinqs, and with the
requirements of technical specification 7.
3-06 DISPOSAL OF EXCAVATION MATERIAL:
a. To the extent suitable and needed, excavated material shall
be used in backfill or fills. Such material shall be free from
frozen material, trash, lumber, broken pieces of concrete havinq
any dimension greater that two (2) inches or broken concrete in
nests regardless of dimension, or other debris. Such materials
shall be susceptible to proper compaction.
b. Excavated materials unsuitable for use, or in excess of
needs, shall be disposed of by the Contractor off-site. The term
"unsuitable", as it applies here, means those materials that are
j~dged unsuitable by the Enqineer.
3-07 BACKFILL:
a. Backfill shall be made from suitable structural excavation
materials, and/or from suitable excavation materials if and as
needed. Such materials shall conform to the requirements of
paragraph 3-06a. above.
b. Backfill shall be compacted to a max~, in-place, dry
density not less than ninety five percent (95%> of the maximum
density, at optimum moisture, obtained in the laboratory (Tex-l!3 E
or AASHTO Proctor). Proctor tests (moisture density relationship)
shall be provided by the Contractor for each type of material
he/she proposes to use for backfill.
c. Backfill shall not be placed against concrete structures
until the expiration of the four (4) day curing period except for
the low water crossing which shall be cured for a period-of eight
(8) days.
d. Compaction shall be obtained by the use of pneumatic or
mechanically actuated tampers. Gravity hand tampers may be used at
the Engineer's option. Backfill material shall be sprinkled or
aerated as necessary to assure the required dens i ty (moisture
density relationship).
3-3
