117
RAMON LUCIO, RIO VISTA, RIO VISTA ANNEX, AND BICENTENNIAL
PARKS RECREATION DEVELOPMENT
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION 7
DRILLED SHAFT FOUNDATIONS
7-04 CONSTRUCTION METHODS:
a. The Contractor shall perform the excavation required for
the shafts through whatever materials encountered, to the
dimensions and elevations indicated or required by the site
conditions. The shaft shall be placed within a tolerance of 1 inch
per 10 feet of depth.
b. The drawings indicate the expected depths and elevations
where satisfactory bearing material will be encountered. This
information is used as a basis for the contract. If satisfactory
material is not encountered at plan elevation, the footing may be
raised or lowered as determined by the Engineer.
c. Temporary steel casing of ample strength to withstand
handling stresses, the pressure of concrete and the surrounding
earth or backfill materials, and watertight will be required for
the entire length of shaft to seal groundwater from the bearing
stratum and to prevent caving of overburden soils into the shafts.
d. The elevation of the top of shaft will be located below
ground level at the time of concrete placement. An oversize casing
from 1 foot above ground elevation to 1 inch below the top of shaft
will be required to control caving of any material into the freshly
placed concrete.
e. The drilled shaft con8truction is next to the San Marcos
River, which is a protected watershed. The Contractor shall be
responsible for the protection of the entire construction area,
such that there is NO silt, sedimentation, or water pollution
generated by the construction of the drilled shaft and subsequent
construction on the bridge. THE CONTRACTOR IS HERESY PLACED ON
NOTICE THA'1' 'l'HB POLLU'l'ION OF THE SAN HARCOS RIVER BY SILT,
SEDIKEN'l'ATION, OR ANY 0'l'HE R WATER POLLUTION COULD CAUSE THE
OPERATION TO BE SHUT DOWN. If the construction is shut down
because of the Contractor's inability to control water pollution
at this site (or any other site), the Contractor shall not be
entitled to additional compensation, and could be penalized by the
liquidated damages if inability to resolve the problems causes the
time of construction to extend past the contract time.
7-2
