TIWC The soil that was excavated from around the leaking lines and the cuttings removed during drilling have been placed on plastic in the maintenance yard. This area is secure within a barbed wire 6 foot security fence and is shown in figure 1. The contaminated dirt has been placed on 6 mil plastic. Initially, an earthen dike was constructed to prevent surface runon & runoff. This dike has been upgraded by placing an 8 inch pipe barrier underneath the perimeter of the plastic. The plastic edge has been secured by the placement of clean fill dirt. 5.0 SITE MAP ~ site map has been prepared, see Figure 1. The original location of the four underground storage tanks is indicated. The exact orientation of the two small diesel tanks (1 & 2) is not known. Tank 3 is a regular gasoline tank. Tank 4 is an unleaded gasoline tank. The lines 3 & 4 containing the leaks are shown. The bore holes are indicated on the site map with circles. Concrete covers the area immediately over where the dispensers and tank 3 are. Asphalt covers the area around the building and the driveway to the west storage area. There is a truck wash where the drilling augers are washed between each boring. 6.0 INITIAL SITE INVESTIGATION The soil beneath each of the leaks was initially excavated to 2-3 feet. Samples of the/walls and along the bottom of the excavation revealed gasoline contamination beneath each line. Additional excavation with an extend-a-hoe to a depth of 12 feet was performed along the length of each hole. Readings were made with a portable combustion gas detector. with two exceptions, all readings were explosive, i.e. >1.4% gasoline, in the soil interstitial spaces. These two samples were at twelve feet below leak 3 in line 4 and at 4/8" under leak 1 on line 4. Soil samples were taken with a trowel from the side walls and from the soil in the backhoe bucket and immediately placed in glass samples and placed with ice in an ice chest for offsite analysis. 7.0 DRILLING Drilling was performed by Bell & Son Drilling and Texas Industrial Waste Control. Drilling and installation of monitoring wells, recovery wells and injection wells is being performed under the supervision of Robert Crouch, Water Well Driller license * 15. Groundwater was encountered at a depth of approximately fifteen feet. Auger rigs are bein~ Q~Ad for drilling. Eight hoies were augered on 3/17/89.
