<br /> TIWC <br />Soil samples were taken from the cuttings on the auger. They were <br />immediately sealed in glass and put on ice. The auger was then cleaned <br />at the onsite truck wash with hot soapy water between each hole. <br />8.0 SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS <br />Soil samples were collected for offsite analysis from the side walls and <br />from the soil in the backhoe bucket as it was excavated during the <br />initial site investigation. During the second'round of sampling, soil <br />samples were taken from the auger. They were immediately sealed in one <br />liter glass jars and put on "ice" in an ice chest. A complete vertical <br />composite of the water was obtained using a thief made from PVC pipe. <br />These samples were sealed in glass, labeled and placed on ice. <br />A chain of custody was used and the samples were hand delivered to LeC <br />Institute of Water Research where they were tested in accordance with <br />approved EPA procedures. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons were determined <br />using Method 418.1 an Infrared Spectroscopy technique. BTEX (benzene, <br />toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene) were determined using Method 5030 for <br />preparation of the sample and Method 8020 for analysis. <br />Results are attached. LCUIWR samples X9357, 9358, 9359, 9360, 9361, 936 <br />9363 are the soil samples obtained from the backhoe excavation at <br />varying depths. LCUIWR samples X9683, 9684, 9685, 9686, 9687, 9688, <br />9689, & 9690 are the water from each of the auger holes taken on <br />3/17/89. Soil samples taken from a depth of 15 feet from each of the <br />auger holes were tested. Hole #2 was analyzed for soil BTEX at a depth <br />of 5', 10', 15~, 20'. These results are reported as LCUIWR sample <br />#'s X9672, 9673, 9674, 9675, 9676, 9677, 9678, 9679, 9680, 9681, & 9682. <br />Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons have not been run as the level of <br />contamination from BTEX is high enough alone to warrant remedial action. <br />Quality control results are reported with each set of analyses. <br />9.0 EXTENT OF CONTAMINATION <br />The extent of contamination has been assessed through onsite drilling, <br />testing and sampling and offsite testing. The graphical analysis of the <br />analytical data is shown in the attached figures 3 and 4. Three types <br />of contamination have been addressed. <br /> 1) The presence of gasoline in the soil interstitial spaces has <br />been measured using a J-W Combustible Gas Detector Model CSSP meter. <br />This PID meter is designed to measure explosive limits of gasoline and <br />to measure BTEX at the ppm levels. Measurements were made every 5 feet <br />in the hole between augering. Results are documented in attached <br />Table 4. Thesp results have been graphically analyzed in Figure <br />2. <br /> 2) Figure 3 represents an estimation of how far the gasoline <br />contamination has migrated in the soil.
